PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma is widely used in regenerative medicine where by the body’s own cells and growth factors are used to induce and promote healing. PRP has been used in other surgical specialities including orthopedics and dental surgery for decades but its popularity in cosmetic surgery has blossomed in recent years. PRP has been found to promote tissue remodelling in aged skin and is used for skin rejuvenation.

Dr Naylor draws a small amount of blood from the patient, places it in a centrifuge which separates red and white cells from platelets and plasma. The result is platelet rich plasma -PRP which she injects into the patient’s skin. This then fuels tissue healing and growth of new cells which promotes collagen growth, tissue regeneration and helps to make the skin look and feel healthier . The injections are very superficial which along with the use of an anaesthetic cream makes the procedure comfortable for the patient. Microneedling can also be used to deliver the PRP.

Treatment benefits

As well as an overall more youthful look the PRP treatment improves the size of skin pores and the appearance of scaring. It is great for brightening areas of darkened skin and sun spots and leaves a more even and balanced skin tone. The most popular benefit is smoother and less obvious wrinkles and fine lines.

Frequently Asked

Are there any side effects?

Straight after the treatment the skin will feel tight but comfortable. Since the PRP is autologous (coming from your own blood) adverse reactions are rare. Patients may experience slight redness, swelling and mild bruising which may last a few days only.

How quickly will I see results?

Visible results can take from between two to twelve weeks and vary between individuals. Results are dependent on different factors such as general health, previous skin quality, age, diet and skin type.

Is it painful?

Before treatment Dr Nicky applies a layer of anaesthetic cream to the area to be injected. She uses the finest needles to administer the PRP. Both factors ensure that the treatment is almost pain-free.

What is the recovery time?

Straight after the treatment the skin will be red and tight. Dr Nicky recommends 24 hours of down-time with no makeup application over this period. The next day there may some pin prick marks and slight bruising and swelling but these are very minor and normally barely noticeable.
