What happens at the appointment?

Dr Nicky treats all her patients personally, starting with a detailed medical consultation to assess suitability and discussion covering their desired results and expectations. Once the treatment has been agreed a cooling off period is offered so that the patient can have time to consider if the treatment is right for them. Treatment with ThermaVein is well tolerated and practically pain free. It involves holding a small probe over the vessels tracing their path and delivering a light current to thermo-coagulate the walls thus closing off the visible vessel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ThermaVein ® right for me?

Dr Naylor will carry out a full medical history and clinical examination before recommending ThermaVein. As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any active infection in the area to be treated, there are very few medical reasons that ThermaVein isn’t appropriate.
It is contraindicated in people who:
– Suffer from infectious skin conditions
– Are pregnant
– Are epileptic
– Have a pacemaker
– Take anticoagulants
– Have fake tan on the skin

What are the side effects and risks?

This is a generally very well tolerated treatment. The sensation of the treatment is described as like a ‘pinch’. Because the treatment is precisely targeted, it doesn’t affect any of the surrounding tissue or upper layers of the skin, so there are no precautions recommended after treatment other that keeping the skin dry and clean.
Following treatment, the skin will be red and feel warm. Sometimes light scratch marks can be left after treatment which are referred to as micro-scabs. They generally fade within a few days.

Is the treatment safe?

The 4Mhz current is used worldwide and is registered for the treatment of telangiectasia (spider or thread veins) with the American FDA. The big difference between ThermaVein ® and other treatments is the current. The low current means that it does not coagulate the blood making it safe and effective and there is no risk of pigmentation of the treated area as a side effect.

How long does the treatment last?

The treatment is typically permanent and will usually remove all visible signs of the underlying condition. In some cases, the veins can recur, but a top-up treatment will usually resolve the issue.
